Tectonics of the Immaterial engages with the notion of data as an immaterial entity which revolutionises the 21st century, initiating irreversible global dynamics, but at the same time, relies upon a vast physical footprint, comprising infrastructure and buildings. The physical footprint is part of our material world, existing almost unnoticed in the ‘suburbs’ of our perception. The brief focusses on developing a data centre on the Orkney Islands. The data centre relates to a cohabitation strategy; including student accommodation, community centre and a thermal spa. There was a great importance to ensure that the coming of visiting students and engineers are encouraged to create a meaningful connection with Orkney and the Orcadian locals. This is trying to address the increasing isolation and population decline occurring on the archipelago. The community functions act as a place of convergence for these parties, actively trying to create a place of collaboration and unity. The project is situated as to fill as void within the city of Kirkwall; created by a poor piece of man-made landscaping.
